Real Response Media is proud that its fundraising efforts for School Food Matters are supporting the charity’s valuable work to help children understand the value of healthy food.
The charity – founded in 2007 – was set up to teach children about food and to improve access to healthy, sustainable produce during their time at school.
This year, School Food Matters is running a Young Marketeers in the Regions programme to bring together children from local primary schools to experience the joy of growing, harvesting and cooking fresh fruit and vegetables.
The project, which is operating in Gloucestershire, Newcastle and Liverpool, engages children’s enterprise skills to sell their produce at their local street market and teaches them about food surplus.
This year’s programme got underway in April with School Food Matters gardeners showing children how to sow seeds in their school gardens.
Children then choose which crops they want to plant and learn about what depth to plant the seeds and how often to water them. These hands-on sessions give children a chance to touch the soil, see the insects and explore nature.
School Food Matters development manager Dela Foster said: “Young Marketeers is a great way for children to learn where their food comes from by growing it themselves. This much-loved programme ignites a love in many children for growing and eating vegetables and fruit.
“I’m delighted that we have 24 schools in London and now 12 schools around the country which are benefitting from this programme. We hope to expand to 24 schools around the country.”
RRM founder and CEO Chris Pitchford: “We are delighted that our donation to School Food Matters has been able to support the charity in its vital work.
“It’s so important for children to understand the value of healthy, sustainable food, and we are humbled to be able to play a part in this admirable mission.”
